Defy The Stars Book Review | sprinkledpages

Hi friends!

Welcome back to my blog! Today I am going to be sharing with you all a book review for Defy The Stars by Claudia Gray! This is the first one of her books I have read but I know her Firebird trilogy was quite popular in the book community too!

Originally, I wasn’t going to give this a try because I had written it off as another classic sci-fi novel with the whole dying world and this one special snowflake who could save it trope but then I gave in after hearing positive reviews from other bloggers (and also because of that gorgeous cover – I mean the UK/AUS one GLITTERS!!)

And sorry to say, but it was exactly as I imagined it to be.

Night Swimming Book Review | sprinkledpages

I recently read Night Swimming by Steph Bowe and holy gods it was so good! I didn’t really go in with many expectations, not because I didn’t think it would be good, but because I didn’t know much about the story or the author, Steph Bowe, because this was the first time I’d be reading her work.

Steph Bowe is an Australian author so along with being a fabulous book, it’s also a #loveozya novel!
I highly recommend you all read this amazing book for these top five reasons listed below: (and yes, there are way more reasons than this but these are the main five that stood out to me!)

Also can I just take a minute to say such a huge thank you to The Text Publishing Company, for not only sending me this amazing book, but for also sending me the loveliest care package along with it that included lollies, a Night Swimming bracelet, goat soap and the sweetest note? YOU ARE THE BEST AND KINDEST! <3 span="">

The Secret Science Of Magic Book Review | sprinkledpages

When Hardie Grant sent me this book, I was SO SO SO excited, to say the least. Not only was it so beautifully and lovingly packaged, it was by an author whose work I had previously read and loved (Life In Outer Space AKA the cutest book ever – read it if you haven’t already friends!) and it was an #ozya I was very excited for!

For more thoughts, just keep reading!

Remind Me How This Ends Book Review | sprinkledpages

Hi friends!

Welcome to my no spoiler review of Remind Me How This Ends by Gabrielle Tozer who is an Australian YA author! This was the first time I had read one of her books and I was quite eager because not only had I heard amazing things, Tozer is also an award-winning author and this book seemed amazing!

I’m also doing a different style of review today because as I am writing this, I have written 2 other posts today already and I am so exhausted from my normal subheading style posts so I’m doing something a little more relaxed!

Strange The Dreamer | sprinkledpages

Hey friends!

I hope you’re all having a lovely Friday!

Today I am here to share with you my review for the gorgeous book that is Strange The Dreamer by Laini Taylor! I am sure many of you have heard about this book already but if you haven’t, it’s a YA fantasy by the author of the Daughter Of Smoke And Bone trilogy and I believe it is intended to become a series (not sure how many books yet, I don’t think it’s been confirmed) and I am eager for the next one because this one ends on a cliff hanger!

ALSO! I made a cupcake recipe for this book! YES, I  know that it is a moth on the cover and NOT a butterfly but would you really like to eat something titled 'moth cupcakes'? No. So that's why they have been called 'butterfly cupcakes' but let's just imagine them to be 'winged insects cupcakes'. (That doesn't sound much better does it? Oops)

Going into this, there was a lot of hype. Not only is the book itself utterly gorgeous *makes heart eyes at the book* but the premise sounded so mysterious and alluring and I had heard such positive thoughts circulating about it in the book community!

While I wasn’t the hugest fan of the Daughter Of Smoke And Bone series as a whole, I did really enjoy the first book and wanted to give this one a shot too! THIS IS NO SPOILER.

Stick around to read some of my thoughts on the book below!

The Bone Season Review | sprinkledpages

Guess what I’m here with!

A no spoiler book review for The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon + A GIVEAWAY FOR IT!! (Stick around to the end of this for it!) This book had been gaining so much buzz in the book blogging and bookstagramming community and I finally picked it up after being told to read it forever!

ALSO, if you're looking around my blog a little like whhaaaa, yes, thank you for noticing! I gave my blog a makeover!!!!1!! It had been a while since I had recoded my blog and it was high time so I decided to change things up a little! I am quite pleased with it and I wanna know what you think so leave me some feedback in the comments!

I’ll admit I was a little hesitant because I had heard this was difficult to get into and I don’t tend to reach for adult fiction because it’s such an intimidating genre but I did it and I have no regrets!
Also can we talk about how beautiful the hardcover is? GAH I am in love! I love the red naked book and it’s literally the most vibrant colour I have ever seen! *insert heart eye emoji*

I am also going to be reading the next two books in the series very soon so make sure to stay tuned for those reviews coming your way in the future! THIS REVIEW IS SPOILER FREE.

Let’s begin!

Six Of Crows and Crooked Kingdom | sprinkledpages

That’s right friends!

This is a Six Of Crows and Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo review! *all around the world people stand to applaud as finally, Anisha, has conquered the beast and read…Six Of Crows*

Okay, slightly melodramatic but very true. I have had SO many people on my case to read this duology for the longest time and whenever I would whisper oh so quietly that I had not read Six Of Crows yet, I would be met with SUCH ASTONISHMENT!

So this is to Jananee, who I think has been on my case the longest about reading this duology – because girl, it finally happened!

Also, you can read this entire review without fearing spoilers. including my review for Crooked Kingdom as this is completely spoiler free! Enjoy!

SIX OF CROWS

Six Of Crows and Crooked Kingdom | sprinkledpagesI think the reason I put this off for the longest was because I was scared. I had such high expectations after hearing SUCH positive things and while I do feel it didn’t meet my expectations I also didn’t really expect it to.

Let me just begin by saying this book was super enjoyable and fast paced and action packed and for me, the characters were the best part! They were so realistic and loveable and they all had their own stories and fears and dreams and they felt like real people to me. undoubtedly though Inej is my favourite but I have a lot of appreciation for Kaz, Nina and Wylan!

The slight problem with this was, because Six Of Crows is such a hyped book, I knew almost everything there was to know about the characters and plot before I began. I knew it was a book about a daring heist with anti-hero main characters. I knew all the character names, roughly a little about their backstory and all the ships.

This meant there was no surprise element left for me. I wasn’t able to discover the characters myself and uncover parts about them. I accidently got mildly spoilt for some bits and knew the general gist of the story. I found that I was a little let down by that and the plot.

I’m not one for hugely complicated plots because I always find myself in over my head and just WAYY too confused, like I was in this book. I find that this would have been the perfect character driven book with minimal plot and while some may argue it has both, I would have liked it to be more about the characters and their journey than a complicated heist story. But at the same time, I also do like the dangerous heist plot because damn that’s exciting.

But, anyway back to the characters, I don’t want to turn this review into a huge gush where I cannot stop talking about my love for these 6 anti-heroes but I can’t help myself. For me, there is nothing better than an anti-hero because they are the most realistic type of character.

There was something just so profoundly beautiful about these characters having experienced the worst yet still making something of themselves and taking back what is theirs. It was an ode to survivors and I freaking loved it.

Can I also just have a little segment in here about how much I adored the diversity? Bardugo puts in characters into her novels that are diverse – but wait for it – she doesn’t make the entire novel about their diverse aspects. *moment of silence to allow this to settle in*

Just kidding. (No not really. Authors, please take note.)

From chronic pain and to people of colour (especially women of colour) to positive and uplifting female friendships and showcasing different body types, Bardugo does it all. However I don’t want to get too much into this because it is mildly spoilery and I don’t want to spoil you all like I was!

OVERALL RATING:

★★★★½

CROOKED KINGDOM

Six Of Crows and Crooked Kingdom | sprinkledpages
So this segment is going to be a little shorter than the one above because I’ve already said pretty much all I wanted to! I found Six Of Crows to be better than Crooked Kingdom but Crooked Kingdom to have a satisfying but slightly anti-climatic ending.

I found that this one was way too plot and action heavy and I didn’t really understand what was going on. I literally still do not know what happened and I only got through it because of the characters. It was also pretty chunky to read *sweats nervously*.

The cast was amazing as per usual in this! I actually feel there was more character development happening in this one than the previous and that made me so immensely happy because THEY ARE MY BABIES OKAY? Fight me.

And that ending. I knew it was coming and I hadn’t really expected anything else so I wasn’t disappointed but at the same time, I felt the book ended quite abruptly. Like there was all this action, especially towards the end…and then suddenly nothing.

But other than that, WHAT AN AMAZING DUOLOGY.

READ THIS READ THIS READ THIS READ THIS.

You will fall in love with the characters. And when you think you can’t fall anymore…you’ll fall again. And again. And again. Until you’re a broken mess on the ground.

Yay.

Thank you to Hachette Australia for providing me a review copy of Crooked Kingdom. However, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

OVERALL RATING:

★★★★

Have you read either Six Of Crows or Crooked Kingdom? What did you think? Or are you planning to? And who is one of your favourite anti-heroes? Let me know because I always look for book recommendations with a good anti-hero!
