SUMMARY
A Court Of Thorns And Roses by Sarah J Maas is an amazing,
amazing book! I absolutely adored it and as I write this, I am half way through
the next book and already wishing it was next year so I could read the third instalment
of the trilogy when it is released. I heard about this book through many
recommendations I saw on booktube and bookstagram and what really drew me to
the book was the title and the cover. I have heard lots of great things about the
book and they really didn’t lie. I have also read Sarah J Maas’s other series,
Throne Of Glass and I heard about the other series she was writing.
To be honest, I was quite surprised to like the book because
I have read the Throne Of Glass series and while I did enjoy it quite a lot, I didn’t
love it as much as I love this book. But I’m going to talk about why I love
this book so much later!
ACOTAR is about a huntress named Feyre who is out one day,
hunting in the forest to be able to feed her family. When she kills a wolf to
capture its prey, she doesn’t think much of it. Unknowingly, she has broken an
agreement the humans and the faeries (that live on the other side of the wall)
have and one day, the price must be payed when a strange creature comes to
collect it.
A life for a life.
She must go with him into the faerie lands and live in his
court. She is free to roam but is forbidden to escape. Her captor wears a mask,
along with the others in the court and she knows very little of him. Feyre must
find a way to break a spell or lose her heart forever.
COVER
So I don’t usually include cover in my blog reviews unless I
really want to comment on it. And boy do I want to comment on the ACOTAR cover!
It’s flipping gorgeous. I love how bright it is. And the font! I feel like it
represents the story quite well. Anyone else agree with me on how awesome it
is?
WRITING
The writing of this book is quite well done and flowing. I
feel like Maas’s writing has really improved as she continued to write because
when you compare her very first book, Throne Of Glass to ACOTAR, you can see
how far it has come. I felt the writing was quite seamless. It also created a
feeling of suspense that really had me wondering what would happen next.
The way Maas wrote the characters really made me empathize
with them. There were so many times when I just wanted to reach through the
book and give the characters a big hug.
IDEA
This book is based on Beauty And The Beast (but it is not a
re-telling, I promise), which is great because I am a big fan. Using elements
of Beauty And The Beast and her own originality, she twisted a beautiful and
unpredictable story that is so wholly unique and amazing. She included folklore
and fairy tale magic and her own ideas and blended it all together!
I have never read anything quite like this book and I am definitely
planning to re-read!
There is not too much I can say about the plot without giving
it up however, prepare to be surprised. The book has so many twists and turns
that it’s like sitting on a rollercoaster. Yes, it does have elements of Beauty
And The Beast. But no, it is nothing like Beauty And The Beast, which is what
really surprised me, going into it.
CHARACTERS
Feyre is such an awesome, kick-ass character. I like how
humble and kind she is. I love how she puts her loved ones first and does
anything for them, even if they don’t return the same sentiment. I love how she
sees things differently and loves to paint even though she grew up in harsh
conditions. I love how stubborn, headstrong and smart she is. Feyre is such an enjoyable
character to read about because she is really quite lovely and layered and well
written.
Tamlin is another main character. I really love him for how
kind he is to Feyre and to his people. It is easy to see how much he cares, how
selfless he is and how much he cares for the people close to him.
FINALLY…
This has been a super long review, which is proof that I really
loved ACOTAR and really, really wanted to talk about it! It’s a lovely and
action packed read, like any Sarah J Maas book and quite well expressed, with
beautiful character and an even better plot.
Read it.
