The Upside Of Unrequited Book Review | sprinkledpages

Aha I’m so excited to be sharing my review for this today! This was one of my most anticipated releases of 2017 and I am happy to say it did not disappoint!

If you didn’t know, Becky Albertalli is the writer of Simon VS The Homo Sapiens Agenda, which was also such a cute and funny book and one that is a favourite of many! After having read that last year, I was quite excited when I heard she was releasing a new book, especially since there was so much hype surrounding it!

Plus I'm going to be showing you how to make these delicious Cadbury Mini Egg inspired book cookies!

About the book.

Book: The Upside Of Unrequited
Author: Becky Albertalli
Pages: 366
Publisher: Penguin Australia
Published on: 11 April 2017
Synopsis: Seventeen-year-old Molly Peskin-Suso knows all about unrequited love—she’s lived through it twenty-six times. She crushes hard and crushes often, but always in secret. Because no matter how many times her twin sister, Cassie, tells her to woman up, Molly can’t stomach the idea of rejection. So she’s careful. Fat girls always have to be careful.

Then a cute new girl enters Cassie’s orbit, and for the first time ever, Molly’s cynical twin is a lovesick mess. Meanwhile, Molly’s totally not dying of loneliness—except for the part where she is.

Luckily, Cassie’s new girlfriend comes with a cute hipster-boy sidekick. Will is funny and flirtatious and just might be perfect crush material. Maybe more than crush material. And if Molly can win him over, she’ll get her first kiss and she’ll get her twin back.

There’s only one problem: Molly’s coworker Reid. He’s an awkward Tolkien superfan with a season pass to the Ren Faire, and there’s absolutely no way Molly could fall for him.

Thank you to Penguin Australia for providing me a review copy however this is an honest review and all thoughts and opinions are my own.

My thoughts.

{ writing }

Albertalli’s writing is always so fun and easy to read! Her books are quite short and once you start reading, you just get sucked into the cute story! They are super addictive and hard to put down once you’ve started them! It was also quite funny and very sensitively written.

{ idea }

I feel like Albertalli’s books aren’t ‘unique’ as such but her take on them make them really unique. She uses some common YA tropes such as ‘the girl who is beautiful and doesn’t know it’ and ‘the shy girl’ but really puts her own spin on them, in a way that makes her books stand out from others. Her characters feel more real because they have their likes and dislikes and strengths and flaws and I just loved it all!

I love how she went beyond the surface for her characters too! Albertalli explores her themes quite deeply through the use of characters and their personality traits. She looks at what first love means and how someone may think they want something to find it’s not something they wanted at all in such a funny, thoughtful way!

I thought it was really fantastic the way she incorporated her diversity too, in such a seamless way! This book features characters from the LGBTQI+ spectrum, specifically gay and pansexual characters. It also features underrepresented bodies as both Molly and Reid are said to be fat.

{ plot }

Unlike most contemporaries, this actually managed to have a plot!
Yes, it was more focused on characters rather than action but I feel the book progressed quite well and the coming-of-age aspect worked superbly with this! I loved how much Molly developed and how the relationships she had with her family were explored and the new relationships she was forming were expressed.
It added so many layers to the plot and to the characters and it all worked quite well together.

{ characters }

I found Molly to be super relatable too! We’re around the same age and I loved how she had some of the same feelings I often have in terms of relationships and first love. I don’t want to get too personal but I loved how Molly mirrored a lot of my own thoughts and feelings and she was a lot like me in her Pinterest obsession, love for cookie dough and chocolate and how much regard she had for her family!

The Upside Of Unrequited Book Review | sprinkledpages

It was so great to find a character who represented me – personality wise.

{ finally }

This was such a fantastic read and one that'll always give me the warm fuzzy feels every time I think back to it! I do recommend you read it, especially if you like cute contemporaries and enjoyed her other book!

OVERALL RATING:

Have you read The Upside? What did you think? Or do you plan to? And have you read Albertalli's other book, Simon VS The Homo Sapiens Agenda?

  3. I really want to read this; I've heard great things about it. I really liked Simon, so this one should be good. I'm glad this books is really diverse. And I'm so with you--my favourite characters represent my personality rather than my ethnicity/hobbies (though I do love nerdy new zealand indian girls in books, not that there are many of those)

I think I liked Simon a teensy bit more as a book but I adored Molly and her Pinterest obsession, and the cast of characters! Such a happy book. Those cookies sound delish too!

  16. I agree with your thoughts on this book. It was such a special read, even thought the main plot itself isn't unknown or uncommon in this genre, but the more diverse and authentic characters, as well as other plotlines made it unique or at least unique-ish. And Becky Albertalli's writing really is as sweet as she is as a person!
    xx
    hope
