Unearthed Book Review | sprinkledpages

Hi friends!

It’s been quite a while wow. If you don’t keep up with my social medias, you may not know my extended absence was due to having exams for the past month which I was SO stressed for but now they are done and I finally have some time to read and review.

Today I’m going to be sharing with you a spoiler free review for Unearthed which I was so, SO excited to receive an ARC of because it is written by Amie Kaufman and Megan Spooner, both who are super cool humans and authors of the Starbound trilogy which I really enjoyed.

This was another sci-fi but other than that, I didn’t know anything about it before I began. And safe to say, but I really enjoyed it and this comes from someone who is not a very huge sci-fi reader.
Fans of Sleeping Giants will ADORE this book!

About the book.

Book: Unearthed
Author: Amie Kaufman and Megan Spooner
Publisher: Allen And Unwin
Pages: 664
Publication date: November 2017
Synopsis: When Earth intercepts a message from a long-extinct alien race, it seems like the solution the planet has been waiting for. The Undying's advanced technology has the potential to undo environmental damage and turn lives around, and Gaia, their former home planet, is a treasure trove waiting to be uncovered.

For Jules Addison and his fellow scholars, the discovery of an alien culture offers unprecedented opportunity for study... as long as scavengers like Amelia Radcliffe don't loot everything first. Mia and Jules' different reasons for smuggling themselves onto Gaia put them immediately at odds, but after escaping a dangerous confrontation with other scavvers, they form a fragile alliance.

In order to penetrate the Undying temple and reach the tech and information hidden within, the two must decode the ancient race's secrets and survive their traps. But the more they learn about the Undying, the more their presence in the temple seems to be part of a grand design that could spell the end of the human race...

I was provided a copy for review by Allen And Unwin however all thoughts and opinions are my own and this is an honest review.

My thoughts.

{ writing }

I think both Amie and Megan are so good at writing very fast paced, action filled and edge of your seat reads, which is exactly what they delivered in this one. There was a dual perspective – one written by each author I am guessing – and I think this worked very well for this novel to create suspense and help readers connect with the characters.

The writing lent a lot to creating the perfect atmosphere where there was a perfect blend of sci-fi techy terms and world building to action packed fight sequences to slower moments that created a connection with the characters.

And on that note, I think the world building of this was so well done. There was so much complexity to it, yet it was so well explained without becoming info-dumpey. I liked how it dealt with bigger, more complex issues and explored humanity and what is beyond.

{ idea + plot }

I think this was a very unique read. It is a lot like the YA version of Sleeping Giants, but at the same time, there is a very original twist to the story and it really stands out among other sci-fi reads, including ones written by Amie herself such as Illuminae and the Starbound trilogy. The philosophical undertones and the desperate action scenes blend together quite well to create a lasting, ominous feeling.

The plot was extremely interesting! I managed to read the book in a day even though I had exams (which says a lot!) and it was so hard to put down. It was extremely unpredictable meaning I had no idea what was going to happen next, which characters to trust and more importantly, whether the main two characters would ever trust each other. Other than that, the history and the mystery of the story were SO INTERESTING and it was one of the best sci-fi books I’ve read.

{ characters }

For some reason, whenever I read sci-fi or super action packed books, I find it SO hard to love the characters in the book but I really did! They both that their own reasons for being on the mission and I liked how well they complemented each other.

While I think the romance was unnecessary and maybe a little forced, I did enjoy the characters overall. I thought they were very brave and caring, which is so admirable. I liked how their backstories were very well built up so you could see where they were coming from and what caused them to do various things throughout the novel.

{ overall }

Overall, I really enjoyed this! It was so well written and engaging and one of the best sci-fi’s I have read. I highly recommend you pick it up because I am sure you’ll enjoy it!

  4. I'm glad you liked this one, Anisha! I don't really have much of a vested interest in reading it - the blurb just didn't jump out at me :(

    I have read the Starbound trilogy, and even though I adored the first book, they kind of went downhill with each one *cries* I ended up only mildly enjoying the third book, which I think is one of the reasons I'm hesitant to read Unearthed. Also, so much of the marketing has been around it being a YA Indiana Jones in space. I... have never watched Indiana Jones so that doesn't intrigue me at all D:

    Even so, it's awesome you liked it so much! Especially since it broke some barriers you usually have with sci-fi. Book that do that are awesome :D

    Lovely review <3

  6. I am glad that you liked this one! I've only read These Broken Stars by the pair, and I wasn't a fan. But I will consider reading this one since you loved it so much. I too tend to dislike or not connect with sci-fi characters, but if you seem to like these characters maybe I will too! Great review!
