My thoughts.
{ WRITING }
Firstly, can we just talk about how ridiculously long this
book is? 700 pages is a huge chunk and it sucks that until you hit about half
way, nothing much happens. I found it very hard to get into and if I hadn’t been
on the blog tour for it, I would have put it down. The writing seemed forced
and overly sweet to be honest and I found it didn’t have a nice flow to it.
However, I am glad I kept on reading it because after it hit
half way, it got quite interesting and I found myself really getting immersed
in the world. The switching narratives could have been annoying however I feel
like Cast did it quite well because it created suspense but not enough for me
to feel aggravated or to leave me hanging.
{ IDEA }
I personally love the idea of this book! Other than the ‘elemental’
aspects which deal with the sun, the moon and the trees, I found it to be
unlike anything I’ve read before because it took on the whole prehistoric vibe
but still remained fresh and new!
I was expecting it to be the traditional ‘two rival tribes’
plotline and while it is, Cast puts an interesting twist on it that was a little
hard to get a grasp of (I still fully don’t haha but I think that’s mostly
because of my reading!) but provides for an interesting book!
Also, can I just take a moment to mention how much I love
that DOGS ARE IN THIS BOOK! If you know me at all, you’ll know how much of a
puppy addict I am and I think it is so freaking awesome that this book centres
quite heavily around dogs!
{ PLOT }
As mentioned before, this book starts off quite dry and dull
and doesn’t really pick up until you hit the middle. Even then, the main
characters only meet three quarters of the way through which I found was a little
frustrating because not all of the description was necessary.
However, the moment it hits half way, things pick up and you
find yourself really drawn into the world. I’d be reading this book on the
train and nearly forget where my stop was because of how interested I was to
know!
The book balanced suspense and thrill really well while
making sure there weren’t too many cliff hangers and there was some character development
and growth throughout.
{ CHARACTERS }
I found I didn’t connect with the characters that much,
which is kind of unfortunate!
Mari was super headstrong and kind and serious and I quite
liked these things about her. I thought she made for a great protagonist and I would
have liked to be able to connect with her some more! However, I found her to
have some special snowflake vibes going on and while I’m not entirely sure how I
still feel about that, I like Cast wrote it in a way that it was still
understandable and quite enjoyable to read!
I feel like we don’t really get to know Nik very much but I found
him pleasant nonetheless.
BUT RIGEL! RIGEL MY BABY! I love dogs in books and this just
made my heart so happy because a dog was one of the main characters and he
seemed like the sweetest, kindest thing and my HEART JUST CAN’T TAKE IT
OKAY????
{ FINALLY… }
Although the start was a little slow, I did quite enjoy this
book! The main reason I couldn’t give it a higher rating was because the start
was quite slow and I found it very hard to connect with the characters! However,
it was quite intriguing and really reeled me into the world! I do recommend you
give this a try but be prepared to take a while to get into it!
OVERALL RATING:
★★★ ½

I haven't quite decided if I'm going to pick up this book. A slow start can be annoying, and my past experiences with Cast have only been okay, but it does sound super intriguing. I'm glad you enjoyed it overall :)
ReplyDeleteThank you! And yes, a slow start is VERY annoying but I actually found it to be quite worth it so it's up to you if you're still interested! :)
