SUMMARY

Empire Of Storms is the fifth book in the Throne Of Glass series written by Sarah J Maas. It’s about Aelin and her friends as they try to keep the dark king, Erawan from rising and destroying anything in his path. However, there are many difficulties along the way such as Maeve, the cruel and wicked immortal Fae queen, and with Aelin’s people relying on her to stop Erawan and restore Terrasen, what is she willing to sacrifice to stop her world from being torn apart?

I adored this book! I haven’t always been the biggest fan of the ToG series for various reasons, but this book was absolutely amazing! There was not a single moment that I was not captivated and enthralled by what was happening and I couldn’t read it fast enough!

WRITING

One thing I adore about Maas’s writing is how detailed and vivid it is! The imagery and precision used to describe the scenes of the book are incredible. I love how she includes even the littlest of things and I found that to be very engaging as a reader – to be able to imagine the world these characters are a part of!

The story was told from quite a lot of perspectives (it’s in third person) and if it had been another writer, I might have found it to be quite jarring, but Maas does the change seamlessly! In fact, I found the perspectives made the book a lot more suspenseful and intriguing and I loved getting to see thoughts from the eyes of the other characters rather than only the main characters! I felt it gave the ‘minor’ characters some bigger and more important roles!

I also love how Maas weaves her story so beautifully and skilfully. Everything that happens, happens for a reason. All the things that happened in the previous books begin to add up. Some questions get answered and more questions get asked.

I adore that in a writer and you can rest assured that the writing of this book will blow you away!

IDEA

I love how Maas keeps adding to the ToG world. I think I mentioned this in one of my previous reviews but I love how with each book, Maas seems to zoom out.

In ToG, she was quite focused on only Adarlan and Celaena being an assassin. By CoM, it had zoomed out a little more with the wyrdmarks, Nehemia’s death and Aedion being introduced as a member of Aelin’s court. In HoF, she went to another continent, learnt how to control her powers and met more characters. And by QoS, she was back in Adarlan, to reclaim her kingdom. By this time, the story line had deepened with Erawan, Mala, Brannon and Elena and their part in the story, Aelin’s fire magic, Rowan and so many more people. And it zooms out even more in EoS.

Do you get what I’m saying?

She started off quite focused on one thing in her first book, but over the course of her books, she has delved deeper and deeper into the bigger picture and as a reader, I find nothing more intriguing than wanting to get to see the whole picture!

The idea of EoS is incredible! So many things happen, so many secrets get revealed and it is absolutely and totally epic!

PLOT

The plot of EoS is so unpredictable and thrilling! When I began the book, I had no idea it’d reach the point it did at the end! I loved every second of the time I spent reading it (which was a lot of time because it’s such a huge book, I didn’t even know if I’d be able to finish it!).

It was so fast paced and action packed. Even though I had a lot of assessments from school this week, I absolutely could not put it down because it had me gripped!

Unfortunately, I cannot talk much about the plot without giving it away so all I’ll say is read it and I have a discussion coming soon where I’ll be able to talk about the plot in depth without holding back!

CHARACTERS

The character development in this book was so incredible! I loved seeing the characters grow from who they’d been in the previous books and step into their new skin. Characters like Rowan, Aelin , Lyssandra, Elide and Manon developed quite a bit and in my opinion, for the better.

I love seeing how Aelin’s court (Rowan, Aedion, Lyssandra and more) bond in this book. They really come together and act like a real family, having each other’s’ backs and all. Old characters make a reappearance and newer characters from HoF and QoS also make an appearance. I loved the way all these characters banded together in the book and the strengths of their friendship and kinship.

There were so many characters in this book and I loved every single one of them, especially the strongly silent types such as Elide, Lyssandra and Dorian. I felt they really made the book stand out!
The other characters were also written superbly, and although Aelin will never be my favourite character (sorry for those who adore her!), I quite liked her in this book for her strength and unwavering spirit. It could be seen how much she’d changed since the first book as she’d stepped into the role of being queen.

Rowan was awesome, as usual! I loved his calm steadiness in the book. Manon was entertaining, as had been expected and Dorian was the kind person he had been in the first book. But there was a hardness around him that had not been there before, which made me sad to see.

I don’t want to talk about the other characters too much in fear of spoiling the surprise for you but there are an absolute bucket of characters in the book and it is flipping awesome!

FINALLY…

AHHHAAA! Such. A. Good. Book. It is, by far, my favourite from the series (sorry CoM) and such an amazing, amazing read with beautiful characters and stunning writing from Maas that it is hard to put down!

I NEED MORE!!!! I can't wait till the next book!
